I have owned this motorcycle for 33 years. I am the second owner. I had planned to keep it until one of us died, but while buying many new parts to restore it, I was seduced by a R1100S that is now living with me. So, it is time for this R75/5 to start seeing new people.
The motorcycle has been used for commuting, general transportation and occasional trips. It has received TLC for the last 33 years. One serious lapse in judgment occurred in 1974, but we both survived to go another 55,000 miles together with no lasting after effects.
This motorcycle is now running perfectly and looks “very good for its age.” (How many times have I heard that.) To be show material, it would need a new paint job, spokes and some miscellaneous small parts that show their age. After that it depends on how anal you wish to be.
The fairing, trunk box, luggage rack, ride off stand and battery are not BMW, everything else is BMW.
If you bring a helmet, I will give you a ride. If you wish to ride it yourself, you will need, a helmet, California motorcycle license, $1,000. deposit and my belief that you can. If you arrive driving a motorcycle, that will strengthen my belief in your riding skills.
The motorcycle comes with the following:
A new Dowco, Guardian cover.
The original Owner’s Manual, tool kit, under seat box and tire pump.
A Clymers repair Manual for all 1970 through 1980 BMWs.
The BMW parts catalog for all R50 through R100S BMWs.
Miscellaneous new spare parts, oil filter, light bulbs, etc.
Any of the old parts you wish to keep.
The replacement of old parts with new parts and rebuild work was done this past summer, except as noted in the list below. I have receipts for over $3,700. in recent parts and rebuild work.
The following is a list of new work:
New condenser, points, plugs and plug wires; new air and oil filter, fuel filters cleaned; all fluids replaced, including forks; both carburetors rebuilt by Bing International, new carburetor air supply tubes and rubber hose, carb. connection to cylinder intake; tachometer, speedometer and odometer rebuilt by Palo Alto Speedometer (original miles reset on odometer by PAS after rebuild); valves adjusted; wheel bearings, swing arm, steering damper and clutch lever greased; new battery and battery retaining straps; new front tire and tube, new rear tire and tube 200 miles ago; new BMW exhaust system, headers, crossover and mufflers; new lower front fender brace; new rubber grips, pegs, boots, fuel lines; new handle bar; new handle bar switches and switch wiring harnesses to head light; new clutch and throttle cables; new chrome plate on the fairing mounting brackets; new chrome plate on the very strong luggage rack.
The clutch plates were replaced about 3,000. miles ago.
The gas tank was new 10 years ago and is still like new with a new cap seal this summer.
The engine, transmission and drive train are original. I changed the fluids regularly and have had no problems.
Look at it this way, I’m selling you $3,700. worth of new parts for cost, they were installed for free on a motorcycle that cost you nothing but the sales tax.
The California registration is good until September of 2007.
